Dog Championships in Europe – Verified and Updated Overview

Note on accuracy: Championship rules change continuously. The data below was verified in April/May 2025 according to the official sources of individual kennel clubs (FCI, ČMKU, SKJ, VDH, ÖKV, SKG, MEOESZ, ENCI, RSCE, SCC, SRSH, Raad van Beheer, HKS, NKK, IKC, The Kennel Club, etc.). A link to the primary source is provided for each country. Before applying for a title, we always recommend verifying the current regulations directly on the website of the respective kennel club.

What has been corrected compared to the original text: outdated CAC numbers for many countries (especially CZ, SK, Hungary, Austria, Italy, France, Switzerland, UK, Ireland), incorrectly listed titles (e.g., "SK Puppy Champion" – number and age limits), non-existent titles (Ireland – Junior Champion does exist), poorly formulated new rules (Austria – abolition of the waiting period from January 1, 2024, UK – new rules for CCs/RCCs from July 1, 2023, Belgium – mandatory CAC from Brussels from October 1, 2025) and missing titles have been added (FCI international C.I.B-J / C.I.B-V since August 2022).

Introduction: How Championships Are Won

Key terms (common to all countries under the FCI):

  • CAC (Certificat d'Aptitude au Championnat) – national beauty championship certificate. Awarded by the judge to an outstanding dog with an "Excellent 1" (V1) rating in the Intermediate, Open, Working, or Champion class. It is not automatically guaranteed.
  • Res. CAC / RCAC – reserve certificate for a dog with V2 from the same class. Most associations recognize it as a CAC if the class winner already has their championship confirmed.
  • CAJC / J-CAC / Junior-CAC – junior beauty championship certificate (Junior class 9–18 months).
  • VCAC / V-CAC / Veteran-CAC – veteran beauty championship certificate (Veteran class, from 8 years).
  • CACIB – international certificate (FCI), awarded only at CACIB shows to one dog and one bitch of each breed.
  • BOB (Best of Breed) – best of breed; BOG – best of FCI group; BIS – best in show.

Classes are uniformly defined by FCI rules (slightly updated since 2018): Minor Puppy (4–6 m.), Puppy (6–9 m.), Junior (9–18 m.), Intermediate (15–24 m.), Open (from 15 m.), Working (from 15 m. + Working Class Certificate), Winners, Champion, Honour, Veteran (from 8 years).

FCI International Championships

International championships are awarded directly by the FCI upon request of the national canine organization, not directly by the owner.

C.I.B. – International Beauty Champion

  • Breeds not subject to a working trial: 4 × CACIB in 3 different countries from 3 different judges, with a minimum of 1 year and 1 day between the first and last CACIB.
  • Breeds subject to a working trial: 2 × CACIB in 2 different countries from 2 different judges + a passed working trial prescribed by the FCI.

C.I.E. – International Show Champion

  • For breeds that are subject to a working trial but have not completed it – same conditions as C.I.B. for breeds not subject to a trial (4 × CACIB / 3 countries / 3 judges / 1 year and 1 day).
  • Introduced on 1 January 2009 as an alternative to C.I.B. for breeds subject to a working trial.

C.I.B.-J – International Junior Beauty Champion (new since 1 August 2022)

  • 3 × FCI-CACIB-J (junior class certificate, Excellent 1 + exceptional quality) from 3 different countries by 3 different judges.
  • First CACIB-J awarded no earlier than 1 January 2023 (in Norway, already at NKK Fauske 2022).

C.I.B.-V – International Veteran Beauty Champion (new since 1 August 2022)

  • 3 × FCI-CACIB-V (veteran class certificate) from 3 different countries by 3 different judges.

Other FCI Titles

  • C.I.T. – International Working Champion (hunting trials / field trials)
  • C.I.B.P. – International Beauty and Performance Champion (sighthounds)
  • C.I.C. – International Coursing Champion (sighthounds)

🌍 Central Europe

🇨🇿 Czech Republic – ČMKU

Association: Českomoravská kynologická unie • https://www.cmku.cz

Czech Junior Champion (CAJC)

  • 3 × CAJC or 2 × CAJC + 1 × CAC from Intermediate/Open/Working/Champion class, up to 24 months of age
  • From at least 2 different judges
  • A CAC obtained up to 24 months of age and used for the Junior Champion title can no longer be used for the Czech Champion title
  • The title does not entitle the dog to enter the Champion Class
  • Res. CAC cannot be used instead of CAJC (unlike with CAC)

Czech Champion (CH CZ)

  • Breeds not subject to a working trial: 4 × CAC, of which at least 2 × from an international show, in 2 different show seasons, by at least 2 judges
  • Breeds subject to a working trial: 6 × CAC in 2 seasons (of which min. 3 × from CACIB and 1 × from a club show) OR working trial + 4 × CAC (of which min. 2 × from CACIB)
  • Res. CAC is accepted as CAC only if the dog with CAC had already been confirmed as a Czech Champion at that moment
  • ⚠️ Note – the original text incorrectly stated 4× CAC across the board. The exact number depends on the FCI working requirement for the given breed.

Czech Grand Champion

  • After confirmation of the Czech Champion / ČMKU Champion title
  • 3 × CAC in the champion class at shows under the auspices of ČMKU, from min. 2 judges
  • Min. 1 × CAC from an international show (CACIB)

Czech Veteran Champion

  • 3 × Excellent 1 in the veteran class, min. 1 × from CACIB, from min. 2 judges
  • Only from shows held in the Czech Republic since 2005

ČMKU Champion

  • 4 × CAC ČMKU from 2 show seasons, from min. 2 judges, of which min. 2 × from CACIB
  • CAC ČMKU = automatically for the National Winner (at National Shows) and CACIB (at International Shows)
  • For breeds that cannot obtain CACIB, CAC ČMKU is awarded to the BOB or BOS winner (from intermediate/open/working/champion class)
  • The title entitles entry into both winner and champion classes

Czech Working Champion

  • Passing the prescribed trial + obtaining 2 × CAC, of which min. 1 × from CACIB

🇸🇰 Slovakia – SKJ

Association: Slovenská kynologická jednota • https://skj.sk
Current rules apply from 1. 1. 2023 (approved by the general assembly on 28. 4. 2022)

Slovak Puppy Champion

  • 3 × VN1 (Very Promising 1) in the puppy class, from at least 2 different judges
  • At least 1 × from an IDS (International Dog Show) with CACIB awarding
  • 1 of the 3 VN1 can be replaced by 1 × CAJC, provided it was obtained up to 12 months of age (this one cannot then be used for the Junior Champion title)
  • ⚠️ The original text incorrectly stated up to 12 m. – the rule "up to 12 months of age" applies, not "12 months". The title is not recorded in the pedigree and does not qualify for the champion class.

Slovak Junior Beauty Champion

  • 3 × CAJC from at least 2 different judges, at shows under the auspices of the SKJ in Slovakia
  • At least 2 of the 3 certificates must be from an IDS (CACIB shows)
  • 1 × CAJC can be replaced by 1 × CAC obtained up to 24 months of age (this CAC cannot then be used for the Slovak Beauty Champion title)

Slovak Beauty Champion

  • 4 × CAC at IDS, NDS, national, club, or special specialty shows under the auspices of the SKJ in Slovakia
  • At least 2 different show seasons (season = calendar year – 366 days do not have to elapse)
  • At least 2 different judges
  • At least 1 × CAC from an IDS with CACIB awarding
  • 1 of the 4 CAC can be replaced by 3 × Reserve CAC (only once; Res. CAC from an IDS can only be replaced by 3 Res. CAC from an IDS)
  • ⚠️ Working breeds: must attach a copy of the International Working Test Certificate

Slovak Veteran Champion

  • 3 × Excellent 1 in the veteran class, at shows with CAC awarding, from at least 2 different judges
  • At least 1 × from an IDS

Slovak Grand Champion

  • After confirmation of the Slovak Beauty Champion title
  • 3 × CAC in the champion class, from at least 2 different judges
  • At least 1 × CAC from an IDS

Slovak Show Champion

  • After confirmation of the Slovak Grand Champion title
  • 6 × CAC from an IDS from 6 different judges

SKJ Champion

  • After confirmation of the International Beauty Champion (C.I.B.) title
  • 4 × CAC from an IDS in Slovakia, from at least 3 different judges

Slovak Honour Champion

  • 3 × Excellent 1 in the honour class at an IDS, from at least 2 different judges

🇵🇱 Poland – ZKwP

Polski Champion Szczeniąt (Puppy Champion) — unofficial club title, not awarded centrally

Młodzieżowy Champion Polski (Junior Champion)

  • 3 × Zw. Ml. (CWC Junior, equivalent to CAJC), from 3 different judges
  • Min. 1 × from an IDS or Club Show
  • Can be applied for online via ZKwP

Champion Polski (CHPL)

  • 3 × CWC (CAC) from intermediate, open, working or champion class (age over 15 months)
  • From 3 different judges
  • Min. 1 × from an IDS or Club Show
  • At least 6 months and 1 day must elapse between the first and last CWC
  • ⚠️ The original text stated only "6 months" – the exact wording is 6 months + 1 day

Polski Grand Champion

  • After confirmation of the Champion Polski title
  • 3 × CWC from an IDS in champion class from 3 judges

Champion Weteran (Veteran Champion)

  • 3 × Excellent 1 in veteran class, min. 1 × from an IDS, from different judges

Working Champion

  • Prescribed trials + show qualifications (depends on the breed)

🇩🇪 Germany – VDH

Deutscher Jugend-Champion (VDH)

  • 3 × J-CAC from at least 2 different judges at international, national, or specialty shows (in Junior Class)
  • (Individual breed clubs such as DWZRV may require 4 × J-CAC)

Deutscher Champion (VDH)

  • 5 × CAC from at least 3 different judges in the following classes: Intermediate, Open, Champion, Working (min. age 15 months)
  • At least 3 out of 5 CACs from CACIB or National shows, max. 2 from specialty / club shows
  • Between the first and last CAC min. 12 months and 1 day
  • ⚠️ The original text stated "5 × CAC" generally without details on time and classes. The exact condition is: 5 certificates + 12 months + 1 day + 3 judges + min. 3 from CACIB/National shows.
  • From May 1, 2024, also: the titles "Bundessieger", "VDH-Europasieger", "VDH Annual Trophy Winner", "German Winner" qualify for entry into the Champion Class only in combination with a CAC from another show.
  • CACs from VDH-Bundessieger (Dortmund), Annual Trophy (Hannover), German Winner (Leipzig), and Europasieger (Dortmund) count double.

Deutscher Veteranen-Champion (VDH)

  • 3 × V-CAC from at least 2 judges at CACIB/National/specialty shows

VDH-Jahressieger (VDH Annual Winner)

  • 4 × CACIB during a calendar year, of which at least 2 must be from shows directly organized by the VDH
  • Qualifies for entry into the Champion Class

Club Championships (Club Champion)

  • Each of the 3 main associations (VDH and breed clubs for individual breeds such as DWZRV, DTK, etc.) may have their own rules – usually 4 CACs from 3 judges, 12 months + 1 day, often with their own working and health requirements
  • A dog can obtain a club championship from all three associations (VDH, breed club, etc.)

Alpensieger / Alpenchampion (joint DE-AT-CH title)

  • 3 × Alpensieger title from 3 countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) by 3 different judges + 1 additional CAC in the country issuing the title

🇦🇹 Austria – ÖKV

Österreichischer Jugendchampion

  • 3 × Jugendbester (Jugend-CACA) at a show in Austria awarding CACA
  • Alternative option: 2 × Jugendbester + 1 × CACA from Intermediate, Open or Working class (up to 24 months, this CACA cannot then be used for ÖCH)
  • Min. 2 different judges
  • The title does not entitle entry into the Champion Class

Österreichischer Champion (ÖCH) – breeds without working trial

  • 4 × CACA at international shows in Austria
  • By min. 3 different judges
  • 2 of the 4 CACAs can be from national shows or club shows with CACA
  • ⚠️ NEW from 1. 1. 2024: The condition of 1 year between the first and last CACA has been ABOLISHED
  • ⚠️ From 1. 1. 2024, the title is not awarded automatically – the owner must actively apply for its confirmation at the ÖKV. From December 2024 via Onlinedogshows.eu.
  • 2 × Reserve-CACA from international shows in Austria can be upgraded to 1 × CACA (but only for 2 of the 4 required CACAs)

Österreichischer Champion (ÖCH) – breeds with working trial

  • 2 × CACA from international shows + 1 × CACA from a national/club show
  • Min. 2 different judges
  • + Passed working trial (Anlagenprüfung is sufficient)

Austrian Grand Champion

  • Upon confirmation of the ÖCH title
  • 5 × CACA in the Champion Class at international dog shows in Austria
  • From at least 3 different judges
  • No time limit

Österreichischer Veteranenchampion

  • 3 × V1 in the Veteran Class at dog shows in Austria with CACA
  • At least 2 different judges
  • Does not entitle entry into the Champion Class

Reserve CACA – promotion rules

  • Reserve CACA obtained behind a dog that is already a confirmed Österreichischer Champion → automatically promoted to CACA (rule preserved).
  • 2 × Res. CACA from international dog shows in Austria → can be promoted to 1 full CACA (max. for 2 of the 4 required for ÖCH)

🇭🇺 Hungary – MEOESZ

Hungária Minor Puppy Bajnok (3–6 months)

  • 3 × Nagyon ígéretes I. (Very Promising 1) in the Minor Puppy Class, from at least 2 judges

Hungária Kölyök Bajnok (Puppy Champion, 6–9 months)

  • Similar conditions for the Puppy Class

Hungária Junior Champion (HJCH)

  • 3 × HPJ (Hungarian Promising Junior – equivalent of CAJC) at the age of 9–18 months at MEOESZ dog shows
  • At least 1 × from a CACIB show, the others from any show with CAC in Hungary
  • From at least 2 judges
  • HPJ from club shows cannot replace HPJ from a CACIB show

Hungária Champion (HCH)

  • Breeds without working trial: 4 × CAC at FCI shows in Hungary in intermediate/open/working class, from at least 3 different judges, with at least 1 year and 1 day (366 days) between the first and last CAC, at least 2 × from a CACIB show in Hungary (including 1 × from a MEOESZ centrally organized CACIB show)
  • Breeds with working trial: 3 × CAC + passed working trial (FCI Working Test Certificate)
  • ⚠️ The original text stated the conditions incompletely. The exact wording requires a "MEOESZ centrally organized CACIB show" as one of the shows.
  • 💡 Practical note: Hungary organizes many shows in one weekend (e.g. in Komárom or Budapest), so it is possible to get 3–4 CAC in 3 days, but 1 year and 1 day must elapse between the first and last CAC.

Hungária Show Champion (HSCH)

  • 6 × CAC in intermediate/open/working/champion classes at FCI shows in Hungary
  • From at least 3 different judges
  • At least 3 × from a CACIB show in Hungary (including 1 × from a MEOESZ central show)
  • At least 1 year and 1 day between the first and last CAC
  • 1 × CAC from a club winner show can replace 1 × CAC from a CACIB show (the condition of 1 × from a MEOESZ central show remains)
  • Titles used for HCH can also be used for HSCH

Hungária Grand Champion (HGCH)

  • After confirmation of HCH or HSCH
  • 4 × CAC in champion class in Hungary, from at least 3 different judges
  • At least 1 × with BOB (HFGY)
  • Only results AFTER the date of issue of the HCH/HSCH certificate are counted

Hungária Veterán Champion (HVCH)

  • 3 × Veteran CAC in Hungary, from at least 2 judges
  • At least 1 × from a CACIB show

🇨🇭 Switzerland – SKG

Schweizer Jugend-Schönheits-Champion (Junior)

  • 3 × Junior-CAC from at least 2 judges at Swiss CAC shows
  • ALTERNATIVE: 2 × Junior-CAC + 1 × CAC from intermediate class (15–24 m.), from at least 2 judges
  • At least 1 × from an international show (IHA)
  • ⚠️ Since 2016, the intermediate class means 15–24 months and the CAC won in it can be counted towards the junior championship

Schweizer Schönheits-Champion (Beauty Champion)

  • 4 × CAC in intermediate, open, working or champion classes
  • From at least 3 different judges
  • At least 2 × from an international show (IHA)
  • At least 11 months and 1 day between the first and last CAC
  • ⚠️ The original text correctly stated "11 months and 1 day". Some other countries (DE, AT) have 12 months and 1 day.
  • Note: For many breeds there are additional requirements (working test, temperament test, ankörung) – depending on the breed (e.g. Boxer, Retriever, Briard…). Details in the SKG appendix.

Schweizer Ausstellungs-Champion (Show Champion)

  • 3 × CAC in intermediate/open/champion classes, from 3 different judges
  • At least 2 × from an international show
  • Reserve CAC is not accepted
  • No time limit
  • Entitles entry into the champion class

Swiss Grand Champion (new since 1 June 2024)

  • The dog must be a confirmed Swiss Show Champion and/or Swiss Beauty Champion
  • 3 × CAC in the champion class AFTER the official confirmation of the Swiss title
  • These 3 CACs must be obtained at international Swiss CACIB shows from 3 different judges

Schweizer Veteranen-Schönheits-Champion (Veteran)

  • 3 × Veteran-CAC from at least 2 judges
  • At least 1 × from an international show

  • After confirmation of the Slovenian Champion title

  • 4 × V-CAC, at least 3 × from IDS, + 1 × BOB

🇫🇷 France – SCC

Champion de France de Conformité au Standard (French Beauty Champion)

For breeds without working trial:

  • 1 × CACS from Championnat de France SCC OR 1 × CACS from Nationale d'Élevage (club show) OR 2 × R.CACS from these shows (within 2 years of the first R.CACS)
  • + 1 × CACS from an international CACIB show
  • + 1 × CACS from "Spéciale" de race (club specialty show organized by the breed club); 2 × R.CACS from a specialty = 1 × CACS
  • 3 different judges (including at least 1 French judge)
  • All other CACS must be obtained within 2 years after the CACS from Championnat / NE
  • Mandatory: DNA registered with SCC (since Jan 1, 2016)
  • For some breeds: health screening (HD, ED) + temperament test (TAN) – within 2 years of obtaining CACS

For breeds with a working trial (e.g., setters, retrievers, sheepdogs):

  • + min. "Très Bon" at a field trial or BICP or successful TAN test

⚠️ The original text stated "4× CACS" – this is NOT a correct description. The French system is structured: 1× from Championnat/NE + 1× from international show + 1× from Spéciale, all from 3 different judges, within 2 years. Plus DNA, plus working/health conditions for some breeds.

💡 Specifics of French shows:

  • CACS is awarded as 1 per sex among the winners of Intermediate, Open, and Working classes
  • CAC is NOT AWARDED in Champion class
  • The application for homologation must be sent within 2 months after obtaining the last title

Champion National de Conformité au Standard (National Champion)

  • For working breeds, where working performance (CACT) is additionally required
  • For country hunting breeds: 2 × CACS at national shows + health screening + min. "Excellent" at a field trial

Champion de France Jeune (Junior Champion)

  • 3 × CACS-J at national shows from 3 different judges
  • + health screening (HD)

Champion de France Vétéran

  • 1 × Excellent in Veteran class at Nationale d'Élevage OR Championnat de France
  • + health screening (HD)
  • No time limit

🇧🇪 Belgium – SRSH/KMSH

  • 3 × Excellent results in the Junior Class under 3 different judges

Champion de Belgique (Belgian Beauty Champion)

  • 4 × CAC, including at least 1 × from a CAC-CACIB show
  • Under 3 different judges
  • At least 1 year between the first and last CAC
  • ⚠️ From 1. 10. 2025: one of the CACs MUST be obtained in Brussels
  • ⚠️ Expected abolition of the "1 year and 1 day" condition retroactively from 1. 12. 2024 (decided by court on 12. 12. 2024, proposal voted on in February 2025)

Champion Vétéran de Belgique

  • 3 × VCAC under 3 different judges, min. 1 year

Working Champion (Champion de Travail)

  • 2 × CCT from a working discipline + show evaluation

  • ⚠️ Only 2–3 IDS are held in Luxembourg per year, so the title is relatively accessible due to reciprocity

🤝 Reciprocal Agreements of ČMKU

ČMKU has concluded reciprocal agreements with several FCI member states, which significantly simplify the granting of a foreign championship for dogs with a Czech national title. Specifically, this applies to the following countries:

Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Israel, Lithuania, Latvia, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Ukraine (or others – the list changes).

How the Reciprocal Agreement Works

If a dog/bitch has been granted a national championship of the Czech Republic (Czech Beauty Champion or Czech Junior Champion), they will automatically obtain the corresponding title of the given country on the basis of a single CAC/CAJC in the country of the reciprocal agreement:

  • 1 × CAJC in the destination country → Junior Champion of that country (if the dog has a Czech Junior Championship)
  • 1 × CAC in the destination country → Beauty Champion of that country (if the dog has a Czech Beauty Champion title)
Note: The reciprocal agreement works both ways – i.e., foreign dogs from these countries with a national championship can obtain the Czech title on the basis of 1 × CAC in the Czech Republic.

Suspension with Belarus

ČMKU suspended cooperation with the Belorussian Cynological Union (BCU) as of March 2022 in response to Belarus's involvement in the Russian aggression against Ukraine. The Polish ZKwP took the same step. The reciprocal agreement with Russia (RKF) remains technically valid, but in view of the suspension of the RKF within the FCI since 2022, its practical use is limited.

Practical Procedure for a Reciprocal Championship

  1. The dog must first obtain a Czech national title (Czech Champion / Czech Junior Champion).
  2. The exhibitor participates in a show in the target country and wins one CAC / CAJC there.
  3. The application is submitted to the national organization of the target country (contacts are available on the ČMKU website).
  4. The following must be attached: a copy of the CAC card, a copy of the judge's report, a copy of the Czech Champion diploma, a photocopy of the pedigree, the completed application form, and proof of payment of the fee.

Major reforms took place recently in ÖKV (1. 9. 2025), VDH (1. 5. 2024), SKG (1. 6. 2024 – Swiss Grand Champion), KC UK (1. 7. 2023), and ZKwP (1. 1. 2024 – Champion Polski Szczeniąt).
  1. Application deadlines vary by country: - France: only 2 months from the last award (the strictest!) - Most other countries: 1–6 months, exceptionally with no limit
  1. Conversion of res. CAC works differently in each country – do not assume universal rules. In the Czech Republic and Slovakia, only if the dog with the CAC already has its national championship confirmed. In Poland, r. CAC is usually not converted at all.
  1. Junior, Veteran, and Club Champion titles usually DO NOT ENTITLE the dog to enter the Champion Class at shows. A full Beauty Champion / ČMKU Champion / Grand Champion does.
  1. Scandinavia (Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway) has a specific system with 1 × CAC per sex from all classes, plus the requirement to obtain 1 × CAC after 24 months of age.
  1. Great Britain and Ireland do not use the FCI system – they award Challenge Certificates or Green Stars; however, their titles are recognized for entry into champion classes at FCI shows.
  1. FCI International Championships (C.I.B., C.I.E., and from 1 August 2022 the new C.I.B.-J and C.I.B.-V) require 4 × CACIB from 3 different countries under 3 different judges, with at least 1 year and 1 day between the first and last CACIB.
  1. DNA / ADN identification is now mandatory in most countries for championship confirmation (France since 1 January 2016, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and others).
  1. Reciprocal agreements with ČMKU save time and money – if you have a Czech champion, a single CAC is sufficient in 11+ countries to obtain the local championship.
  1. Club Championships are awarded by the breed club (not the national association). Conditions are specific to each club, often stricter than the national championship. A Club Champion does not entitle entry into the working or winner class.
